Cyprus plans big changes for better waste management

Upgrades to facilities and new projects aim to fix long-standing trash problems

Newsroom

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment announced plans to upgrade Cyprus' waste management infrastructure, following the European Commission's recent infringement notice over non-compliance with waste directives. The ministry assured that coordinated efforts are underway to bring the country in line with European standards.

Key to this initiative is the 2022-2028 Municipal Waste Management Plan, which outlines a comprehensive network of facilities for handling both mixed and separately collected municipal waste. Upgrades are planned for the Pentakomo and Koshi Waste Management Plants to improve processing capabilities, particularly for organic waste. Additionally, the long-anticipated closure of the Paphos landfill is in progress.

To ensure the plan's success, a feasibility study is being prepared to evaluate the current infrastructure and determine if new facilities are needed in each region. The study will also explore options for energy recovery from waste treatment residues. An open public tender for the study is expected to be launched in early 2025.

The ministry emphasized that collaboration among all stakeholders is essential to solving Cyprus’ waste management issues sustainably. Environment Minister Maria Panayiotou is set to discuss these steps with the European Commissioner for the Environment in an upcoming meeting.

By taking these measures, Cyprus aims to modernize its waste management system and resolve longstanding environmental concerns.
