Officials are preparing for what could be the most crowded parliamentary race in the country’s recent history, with expectations that the number of candidates in the upcoming May 24 elections will surpass previous records.

According to Chief Returning Officer Elikkos Elia, planning is already well underway. Around 1,195 polling stations will be set up across the country, staffed by approximately 6,860 personnel, including more than 1,100 police officers assigned to maintain order on election day. Authorities are confident that the process will be conducted efficiently and transparently.

Looking back at the 2021 elections provides a useful benchmark. At that time, 651 individuals ran for office, including 160 women. This year, early indications suggest that the total number of candidates will be higher, though the exact figure will only be confirmed once nominations are officially submitted on May 6.

The political landscape also appears to be expanding. In the previous election, voters chose among 15 party lists and seven independent candidates. Now, nearly 30 political parties are registered, although not all are expected to take part in the election.

Elia emphasized that safeguards are in place to ensure the credibility of the vote. Party representatives and candidates are allowed to observe every stage of the process, from voting to ballot counting, helping to guarantee transparency while respecting voter privacy.

On the issue of voting equipment, authorities will continue using traditional sealed metal ballot boxes. Elia explained that transparent boxes could compromise secrecy if ballots become visible when inserted.

Finally, he urged political parties and candidates to conduct their campaigns responsibly, presenting their policies clearly and respectfully in a way that contributes positively to democratic life.
