Starting on February 1st, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) will begin installing smart meters in homes and businesses across the island. The goal is to replace 500,000 old meters with smart meters within the next three years. This process will begin in urban areas and involve a large number of crews working intensively, including on weekends. During the installation, consumers can expect a brief power outage of about 20 minutes.
If a crew can't access a meter, they'll leave a card for the consumer to contact EAC and arrange another appointment.
The installation of these smart meters will benefit both consumers and EAC. For consumers, the smart meters will allow them to track their energy consumption in real-time. With the upcoming changes in energy pricing, consumers will also be able to choose the best times to use energy-intensive appliances, helping them save money.
For EAC, the benefits are equally significant. Smart meters will help the company detect faults more quickly, speeding up repairs. EAC will also no longer need to visit homes every two months to take meter readings. Furthermore, the smart meters will make it easier to spot instances of electricity theft.
The project is being funded through a €35 million grant from the EU Recovery Fund, aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of the energy sector in Cyprus.
