Cyprus watches closely as U.S. election stays too close to call

Trump takes North Carolina in early swing state win, but overall result still undecided in tight race with Harris.

Cyprus has been on edge overnight, closely watching the unfolding U.S. presidential election. As vote counts continue in critical states, the race remains too close to call.

So far, election day has gone relatively smoothly at polling stations across the U.S., with only minor glitches reported. One polling station was temporarily shut down after a bomb threat, believed to be of Russian origin, halted voting for 45 minutes. In response, officials went directly to court to request a brief extension to allow voters affected by the closure to complete their ballots.

Trump Wins First Swing State as U.S. Election Hangs in the Balance

With polls now closed in key battlegrounds, the 2024 race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris remains undecided. Trump took an early advantage with a win in North Carolina—the first swing state to be called—giving his campaign a boost as results remain up in the air in crucial states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

NBC News has called the majority of states, with Harris carrying Democratic strongholds like California and New York, while Trump secured Texas and Florida. But both campaigns are now laser-focused on the states expected to determine who reaches the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency. Harris is targeting the so-called “Blue Wall” states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, banking on high urban turnout to give her an edge. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign and supporters, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, are gathered at Mar-a-Lago as they await further results.

Federal officials and law enforcement have been vigilant amid heightened concerns about possible post-election unrest. Temporary fencing has been placed around the White House, and several businesses have preemptively boarded up windows to prevent potential damage. On social media, some extremist groups, including the Proud Boys, have hinted at plans to mobilize, citing concerns over voter fraud.

Adding to security concerns, federal authorities arrested Nicholas Wimbish, a Georgia poll worker, after he allegedly sent violent threats to colleagues. The arrest followed an earlier verbal dispute at a polling site, where Wimbish is accused of threatening several poll workers.

With both campaigns cautiously optimistic and key states still counting large numbers of ballots, a definitive winner may not be known until late into the night or even the following day. As tension builds, Americans await clarity, prepared for any outcome that may come in this critical race.
