The discovery of a dead dolphin washed ashore at Faros Beach caused concern among morning visitors on Friday, after the animal was spotted lying along the coastline by members of the public.
Witnesses quickly alerted authorities, triggering an immediate response from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.
Officials arrived at the scene to examine the marine mammal and collect samples, which will now be sent for specialized laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities say results are expected once scientific examinations are completed.
Municipal workers also moved swiftly to remove the dolphin from the beach, following established environmental and public health protocols. The animal was transferred to a licensed facility for further handling.
While incidents involving stranded marine animals are not uncommon, officials say each case is treated carefully to rule out factors such as illness, injury, pollution or human activity.
The discovery has once again drawn attention to the importance of protecting marine ecosystems around Cyprus, as well as the need for continued monitoring of sea conditions and wildlife health.
Authorities are expected to release further updates once laboratory findings become available.
