Mobile desalination units from the United Arab Emirates are expected to arrive in Cyprus by the end of May, as efforts to address the island’s water supply issues continue, a senior official said Tuesday.
Andreas Grigoriou, director general of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, told the Cyprus News Agency that a large number of boreholes in Paphos are also being connected to the water supply network as part of a broader response plan.
“Experts from the UAE visited Cyprus last week and confirmed the accuracy of the installation plans on-site,” Grigoriou said.
He emphasized that connecting boreholes in Paphos is already at an advanced stage, alongside the upcoming deployment of the mobile desalination units.
“In addition to the three mobile units being delivered from the UAE, our overall plan is moving ahead,” Grigoriou said. “This includes three additional mobile desalination units in Limassol and Paphos, as well as two permanent desalination plants.”
He said the Water Development Department is taking all necessary steps to avoid water cuts and to prevent depletion of reservoir reserves.
Grigoriou added that site selection for the desalination units is based on recommendations from technical experts at the Water Development Department and guided by a comprehensive water management strategy across all districts.
