A local driver was killed in a road accident on Friday morning when his vehicle hit a sign and flipped over in rural Larnaca.

According to police, 39-year-old Greek Cypriot Andreas Andreou from Larnaca was driving his vehicle on a local road from Livadia towards Oroklini in the early morning, around 2:10am, when his car veered off the road and struck a street sign.

Following the initial impact, Andreou was ejected from his car and landed on the asphalt as the vehicle overturned.

An ambulance rushed the driver to the Emergency Room at Larnaca General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

An official report said Larnaca Traffic Police were investigating the cause of the accident, which took place on a road recently named Nicolaou Katounta.

Local media speculated the driver was not wearing a seat belt, but this was not confirmed in the police report.
