The Electricity Authority of Cyprus distribution system operator will begin inspections on June 1 targeting illegal photovoltaic installations and unauthorized increases in renewable energy system capacity.
According to the operator, unapproved solar system modifications can create significant safety risks for both consumers and properties, while also affecting the stability and reliability of the electricity network. Officials said unauthorized installations can interfere with energy production forecasts and contribute to more frequent power curtailments affecting legally registered photovoltaic systems.
Authorities stated that any photovoltaic installation found operating outside approved specifications will be disconnected immediately, since its compliance certification will no longer be considered valid. Consumers responsible for violations may also face investigation costs, police reports, and possible penalties or fines from the relevant regulatory bodies.
The operator said cases will also be forwarded to the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority and the Department of Electromechanical Services for further examination and possible action.
Under Cyprus electricity regulations, property owners must secure approval from the distribution system operator before connecting, extending, or modifying renewable energy systems. Failure to obtain authorization is considered a violation of both distribution rules and network connection procedures.
Consumers who have added unapproved renewable energy equipment or expanded existing systems without permission are being urged to remove the installations immediately. Those wishing to legalize additions or capacity increases must submit the required applications through the official approval process.
