EU pledges €40M to keep Ukrainians warm this winter

Funding will go toward heating, shelter repairs, and vital aid as civilians face a fourth winter of war.

As Ukraine braces for its fourth winter under Russian attack, the European Union is sending an extra €40 million in humanitarian aid to help civilians survive freezing temperatures and war damage.

The money will go toward the basics Ukrainians need to get through the season: repairing bombed-out homes, reinforcing shelters, and improving access to water, sanitation, and heating. Aid groups will also provide cash support, solid fuel, heaters, insulation, and emergency heating points. Special attention is being given to the most vulnerable, the elderly, children, people with disabilities, and families crammed into temporary shelters.

This is just the latest in a massive relief effort by the EU. Since the war began, Europe has sent more than 156,000 tonnes of supplies to Ukraine, including nearly 10,000 power generators, thousands of transformers, and millions of LED bulbs to ease the strain on the country’s battered energy grid. Together with its member states, the EU has mobilized over €4.2 billion in humanitarian aid for Ukraine and neighboring countries while also arranging medical evacuations for more than 4,500 patients to hospitals across 22 European nations.

“Winter brings new hardships for millions of Ukrainians already suffering from the consequences of Russia’s war,” said Hadja Lahbib, EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management. “We must stand united in solidarity, strengthen our collective humanitarian response, and protect the most vulnerable through the cold months ahead.”

For millions of Ukrainians, the aid means a fighting chance to keep the lights on, the water running, and the heat flowing as another harsh winter approaches.
