The European Commission has formally warned Cyprus, along with Bulgaria, Denmark, and France, for failing to properly implement key provisions of the EU’s firearms directive.
The action targets the transposition of Directive (EU) 2021/555, which establishes uniform minimum rules for the acquisition, possession, and commercial trade of non-military firearms, such as hunting and sporting weapons. The Commission said the directive is designed to strengthen public safety and curb illegal gun trafficking.
The four countries now have two months to respond and rectify the issues highlighted in the warning letters. If they fail to take adequate corrective measures, the Commission could escalate the matter by issuing a formal reasoned opinion.
