The European Union will provide approximately €4.4 million to fund the expansion of the Pedieos Linear Park, the European Commission announced.
The project, to be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to create a peaceful, sustainable green space for residents to walk, cycle, and enjoy nature. It will also foster cooperation between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
Goals include restoring the river’s ecosystem, reducing flood and erosion risks, and developing new recreational areas. Restoration will incorporate green paths and elevated walkways while protecting local flora and fauna.
“The EU supports projects that promote sustainable development and green spaces across Cyprus,” said Nicola De Michelis, acting deputy director-general of the Commission’s regional policy department. “This project showcases our commitment to environmental protection and intercommunal cooperation.”
UNDP Cyprus head Jakhongir Khaydarov said the initiative reflects the agency’s dedication to ecological restoration, improved livelihoods, and social cohesion. “We are enhancing environmental value while creating shared cultural and recreational spaces,” he said.
The project is part of the EU’s broader aid program for the Turkish Cypriot community, designed to encourage the island’s reunification under Council Regulation 389/2006.
The first phase is expected to finish by November 2025, with full completion projected for September 2027, pending final EU approval. The Municipality of Nicosia will oversee connection to the existing park network near the U.N. Buffer Zone.
