Police in Limassol are investigating a new case of online fraud after scammers posing as representatives of Cyprus’ General Health System (GESY) allegedly tricked a man into handing over his banking details, resulting in losses of more than €10,000.

According to authorities, the victim reported that he received a text message on his mobile phone claiming to be from the health insurance system and informing him that his profile required updating. The message included a link directing him to a website that appeared legitimate.

Believing the message was genuine, the man visited the site, where he was asked to enter his bank details to pay a small €10 fee supposedly required to complete the profile renewal process.

Shortly after entering his information, scammers withdrew €10,010 from his bank account. The victim then realized he had fallen victim to fraud and filed a complaint with Limassol’s Financial Crimes Investigation Department.

The case is now being handled by the Economic Crime Investigation Office, which is examining how the suspects carried out the scheme and whether other victims may be involved.

Police say the incident is part of a growing wave of online scams in which criminals impersonate trusted institutions in order to gain access to personal and financial information.

Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious when receiving messages containing links, even if they appear to come from official organizations. Citizens are advised not to click on unfamiliar links or enter personal or banking details on websites unless they have independently verified their authenticity through official communication channels.

Police also stress that anyone who may have shared banking information after receiving a suspicious message should immediately contact their bank to prevent unauthorized transactions.
