The fatal traffic collision that claimed the life of 20-year-old Kyriakos Antoniou last summer is now moving into the criminal courts, nearly a year after the early-morning crash shocked the community.
Authorities have instructed that charges be filed against a 24-year-old driver involved in the collision, following months of investigation and the completion of expert technical reports, according to information obtained by officials.
The case file was recently returned to the Legal Service, which directed that the case be registered before a court. The charges are expected to involve traffic offenses related to causing a fatal road collision.
Investigators say key findings from accident reconstruction played a decisive role in the decision to proceed. According to information, analysis showed the 24-year-old’s vehicle was traveling at a speed significantly higher than the 50-kilometer-per-hour limit at the time of the crash.
Authorities also found no braking marks at the original collision scene, a detail investigators considered critical. During reconstruction tests, sharp braking left clear tire marks on the road surface, suggesting that similar evidence would likely have been visible if braking had occurred before the impact.
Experts also examined data retrieved from the vehicle’s electronic recording system, which investigators consider highly reliable and central to understanding how the crash unfolded.
The accident happened around 1:20 a.m. on July 29, 2025, along Larnaca Avenue in Aglantzia. Antoniou, from Agios Dometios, was driving toward Nicosia from the Panepistimiou roundabout when his vehicle collided with a car driven by the 24-year-old man, who was accompanied by a 23-year-old passenger.
Last November, the Legal Service had returned the file to police seeking additional clarifications before deciding whether to pursue criminal proceedings. With the latest technical findings now completed, the case is entering its next legal phase.
The upcoming court process is expected to determine criminal responsibility for the collision that cost a young man his life and left a family waiting months for answers.
