Fidias says Christodoulides dismissed his calls for education reforms

MEP says his three proposals on education were met with indifference at the presidential palace.

MEP Fidias Panayiotou says President Nikos Christodoulides brushed aside his proposals to improve schools, leaving him convinced that “once again nothing will change.”

Panayiotou said he first met with Education Minister Athina Michailidou, who initially signaled agreement with his views. But, he added, “after some time, when I realized that none of what we had discussed would move forward, I decided to go directly to the President.”

He presented Christodoulides with three proposals: a 30% reduction in the curriculum, ending the practice of students repeating a year, and extending school breaks.

“The first thing I proposed was to drastically reduce the teaching material, by 30%, something I saw the President himself agreed with. The second thing I proposed was that students should not be held back in the same class. The third thing I asked the President was to lengthen break times,” Panayiotou said.

But the meeting did not go as he hoped. “The President’s answer was somewhat disappointing. Because the way he was responding was as if he was saying to me, ‘why are you telling me all this?’” he said. “If I don’t tell you, the President of the Republic, then who should I tell?”
