A four-month-old baby boy in Aigio, western Greece, has been diagnosed with drug addiction in a heartbreaking case that’s shocked the country.
Doctors at the University Hospital of Patras confirmed the infant had traces of heroin and cocaine in his system, following his parents’ arrest on serious drug charges. Authorities believe the baby was exposed to narcotics through breastfeeding, as his mother is also suspected of being an addict.
The case came to light when the couple, foreign nationals living in the area, were arrested earlier this week by police officers from Aigialia’s anti-drug unit. Officers found over a kilo of heroin in their possession, along with smaller quantities of cocaine, a set of precision digital scales, mobile phones with SIM cards, 180 euros in cash, and various tools used to cut and distribute drugs.
Immediately after the arrest, police brought the baby to the hospital for medical tests and protective custody. Doctors quickly discovered signs of drug dependency in the infant, raising concerns about the long-term effects on his health.
The parents are facing felony charges of drug trafficking and were ordered to remain in custody following their court appearance. Authorities are continuing investigations, while child protection services are now handling the baby’s case.
