Cyprus Customs officials recently seized over 92 kilograms of chicken, animal offal, and eggs, along with hundreds of duty-free cigarettes, during inspections at Pyla and Agios Dometios.
On April 15, Customs officers, alerted by Larnaca Police, stopped a truck near Pyla and found 64 kilos of fresh chicken meat. The driver, who admitted the violation, paid a €3,300 fine in an out-of-court settlement, and the seized goods were destroyed by a licensed recycling company.
Two days earlier, on April 13, officials at Agios Dometios intercepted a vehicle containing 28 kilos of chicken, 5 kilos of offal, 300 eggs, and 1,400 cigarettes. The cigarettes lacked required health warnings and traceability codes, indicating they were duty-free. The driver, a Greek national, was arrested but later released after paying a €670 fine and agreeing to the destruction of the goods.
Customs warned of serious public health risks associated with trafficking animal products without proper inspections, urging the public to adhere to the Green Line Regulation when purchasing goods from the occupied areas. The regulations aim to prevent the spread of diseases that may result from uninspected animal products.
