German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier embarked on a significant state visit to Cyprus, marking a historic milestone in bilateral relations. During his visit, President Steinmeier engaged in a range of activities aimed at strengthening ties and addressing critical issues.
One of his stops included a visit to Archbishop Makarios III Gymnasium in Platy Aglantzia, Nicosia. President Steinmeier observed a pilot German language learning program, emphasizing the growing educational collaboration between Cyprus and Germany.
The German President also turned his attention to humanitarian concerns by visiting the Kofinou Reception and Accommodation Center for Applications for Asylum and International Protection. Accompanied by Cyprus's Minister of the Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, President Steinmeier was briefed on the current situation and interacted with both residents and staff.
Today's itinerary also included a visit to the village of Lefkara and a luncheon with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in Kato Drys.
During an official dinner at the Presidential Palace last night, President Christodoulides highlighted the shared commitment of Cyprus and Germany to strengthen their bilateral relations. He expressed satisfaction with the increased exchanges and contacts between the two countries.
President Steinmeier, acknowledging the challenging times, praised President Christodoulides as a scholarly leader capable of envisioning a better future and finding ways to achieve it. Both leaders emphasized the need for collaboration in addressing common challenges, including migration and anti-democratic forces.
Addressing the Cyprus problem, President Steinmeier recognized the 50-year division on the island and expressed optimism about recent developments, such as the appointment of a UN envoy and Germany's decision to send police officers to join the UN peacekeeping force.
As President Steinmeier concluded his historic visit, he affirmed Germany's support for Cyprus in navigating the complex issues on the international stage.
