The Pancyprian Grain Producers’ Organization has called on the government to examine stronger measures to contain the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, including the possible closure of crossing points between government-controlled areas and the occupied territories.
In an issued statement, the organization suggested that shutting the crossings could be considered a decisive step to prevent the virus from spreading further. It also urged authorities to increase monitoring and inspections along the ceasefire line.
At the same time, the group expressed solidarity with livestock farmers across Cyprus who are currently facing serious challenges due to the outbreak.
According to the organization, the measures already announced by authorities appear to be moving in the right direction. However, it stressed that these actions must be implemented quickly and effectively. The group also called for both financial compensation and psychological support for affected farmers, noting that many have suffered significant losses and need assistance to meet immediate expenses and restart their operations.
The organization highlighted the importance of livestock farming within Cyprus’s agricultural sector, emphasizing that an outbreak of animal disease can have wide-ranging consequences beyond individual farms, affecting the broader rural economy.
Finally, the grain producers expressed hope that relevant authorities will act swiftly to contain the disease. They also stressed that the agricultural community in Cyprus remains united and determined to overcome the current difficulties through cooperation, responsibility, and mutual support.
