A British naval destroyer, HMS Dragon, has arrived in Cyprus after a journey of nearly two weeks from Portsmouth, where it departed on March 10. The deployment is intended to reinforce air defense capabilities at the UK’s bases on the island.

The overall timeline from the decision to send the vessel to its arrival spans about three weeks, including roughly seven days between the initial decision and its departure. UK Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed in Parliament that the ship has reached the Eastern Mediterranean and is beginning to integrate into joint defense operations alongside allied forces.

The move follows heightened tensions in the region, coming three weeks after an Iranian drone strike targeted the RAF base at Akrotiri. HMS Dragon is regarded as one of Europe’s most advanced platforms for air and missile defense, designed to counter threats such as combat aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles.

The destroyer is fitted with the Sea Viper air defense system, using Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles, supported by the SAMPSON radar, which can track and engage multiple targets at once. Its armament also includes a 114mm naval gun and close-range defense systems. In addition, it can carry a Wildcat helicopter for surveillance and anti-submarine missions.

HMS Dragon has a history of deployments across strategic regions including the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Persian Gulf. It frequently operates as part of British and NATO missions and is commonly assigned to escort aircraft carriers.
