Larnaca’s giant flamingo takes flight: From concrete eyesore to city icon

A decade-old idea finally blossoms into a breathtaking mural, greeting visitors with color and creativity at the city’s entrance.

What was once a dull, grey concrete tank standing at the entrance to Larnaca has now been transformed into a striking work of art, a monumental flamingo that welcomes visitors as they drive into the city. The impressive graffiti piece, created by street artist Achilleas Michaelides, better known as Paparazzi, has already become a local landmark and a symbol of creativity and transformation.

The idea for this artwork has a long history. Over a decade ago, in 2014, Larnaca resident and creative thinker Artemios Mallas first shared his vision on social media, a proposal to beautify the city’s entry point and reflect the region’s unique character through public art. Eleven years later, that concept has finally come to life through a collaboration between the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company and the Municipality of Larnaca.

In a recent post, Mallas expressed his joy at seeing his idea realized:

“From concept to reality… what started as an idea shared with Larnaka Tourism has now come to life. Kudos to Nana Asmeni Pavlou, Larnaka Municipality - Δήμος Λάρνακας and the Larnaka Tourism Board for turning this vision into action, enhancing the very first thing visitors see as they enter the city from Larnaca International Airport.”

The choice of subject, a flamingo, is particularly meaningful for Larnaca. The pink-hued bird has become one of the most recognizable symbols of the city, thanks to the nearby Larnaca Salt Lake, where thousands of flamingoes migrate every winter. Each year, from late November to March, the shimmering lake turns into a breathtaking spectacle as the elegant birds gather in its shallow waters. Locals and tourists alike flock to the site to capture photographs of this natural wonder, which has become synonymous with Larnaca’s charm and ecological beauty.

By featuring the flamingo in such a prominent place, the mural not only beautifies a previously neglected structure but also pays tribute to the city’s connection with nature and its growing reputation as a sustainable, art-loving destination. What was once considered an industrial eyesore has now been reborn as a vibrant artistic statement and visual reminder of Larnaca’s evolving identity.

The initiative has been widely praised on social media, with residents celebrating the cooperation between local authorities, artists, and citizens. Many see it as a promising sign of more urban beautification projects to come, a movement to bring color, culture, and creativity to the everyday spaces of Larnaca.
