The last patient that was being treated for coronavirus in the Republic of Cyprus’ designated coronavirus hospital in Famagusta was discharged Monday noon.

The patient had tested negative to two consecutive coronavirus tests.

Since March 11, when the Famagusta General Hospital was designated as the Republic’s coronavirus health centre, 151 coronavirus patients were admitted, while 136 returned home after fully recovering. An additional 10 people were transferred to the Eden Resort rehabilitation centre in Tersefanou pending their full recovery.

Karayiannis: coronavirus no longer concerning, but still among us

Member of the health advisory committee Petros Karayiannis, who was asked to comment upon the coronavirus case that emerged in the Republic on Sunday involving a hotel worker in Paphos after consecutive days of zero new cases, said coronavirus still active in the Cyprus community.

He added that Cyprus will continue seeing new coronavirus cases sporadically. “This is the way it will be from now on,” Karayiannis said.

He noted the new case was not a cause for concern, and was to be expected, as were the cases that emerged in schools and other businesses once these resumed operation.

“What remains to be done is contact tracing,” Karayiannis said, as the new case did not emerge through contact tracing efforts so work still needs to be done to locate the source of the hotel worker’s infection.

“The ugly thing about the new case is that it was found within the community, as it did not emerge from a tourist or from someone who crossed over from the north,” Karayiannis said, noting it must be deciphered if the source is a known case.
