The ''Red Button'' program provides 24/7 support for vulnerable elderly people living alone, aiming to boost safety, independence, and peace of mind.

Elderly people living alone or far from their families will soon have access to round-the-clock emergency help and emotional support, thanks to the long-anticipated “Red Button” Programme, which is finally being launched in Cyprus.

The new initiative, announced by Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Marilena Evangelou, is set to improve the safety, well-being, and peace of mind of older citizens, particularly those aged 75 and over, living alone or as part of a couple, and receiving the Minimum Guaranteed Income or Low Pensioner’s Allowance.

For many families who worry about elderly loved ones being home alone, the Red Button is a lifeline. The system is simple: a wearable device or accessible emergency button connects the user directly to a 24/7 call center staffed by trained professionals who can respond instantly to a wide range of situations, from medical emergencies, fires, and floods to psychological distress or signs of abuse.

“This is a major tool for protecting and supporting our older population,” said Evangelou. “It was part of the very first National Strategy for Active Ageing, and though it took time and effort, we are committed to seeing it through because we believe in it.”

The pilot phase will be carried out by the Third Age Observatory, with funding from the State Aid Plan of Minor Importance under the Social Welfare Ministry. The program is aimed at seniors most in need, especially those with health issues, limited mobility, those living in remote areas, or those with little to no support network.

But it’s not just for emergencies. The Red Button will also offer psychological support, giving older people a critical sense of connection, especially important for those feeling lonely or isolated.

Evangelou said the launch marks a meaningful step in giving back to the generation that built today’s society and reflects the government’s determination to improve quality of life for older people across the country.

A joint press conference will soon follow to present more details. Authorities will reassess the program six months after launch to fine-tune it and determine next steps for wider rollout.

After six years in the pipeline, the Red Button Programme is finally moving from promise to reality, and it’s expected to be a game-changer for elderly care in Cyprus, offering real reassurance that help is never more than a button away.
