Greek male driver ejected from car through the rear in horrible accident near Kornos

An 18-year-old man died in the Intensive Care Unit on Sunday following a horrible accident on the Nicosia-Limassol highway.

According to police, Alexandros Popovides, described as a Greek national of Georgian origins, and a permanent resident of Cyprus, was driving his car northbound on the Nicosia-Limassol highway on Sunday afternoon.

Around 2pm, under circumstances not yet fully known, he lost control of the steering wheel near the Kornos exit and initially struck the left guard rail. The vehicle then swerved back into the road crossing both lanes and crashing with force into the guard rail in the middle of the highway.

The young man was rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced him dead at 3:10pm.

The accident took place near the district boundaries between Nicosia and Larnaca, with the northbound lane shut down until the wreckage was cleared.

There were no reports on whether other vehicles were involved in the accident. Larnaca police are investigating the incident, including whether or not the victim was wearing his seat belt.
