DISY MP George Pamboridis has accused a private hospital in Nicosia of refusing to admit a patient suffering from postoperative complications following a series of procedures carried out by one of the hospital’s doctors.
In a post on social media, Pamboridis said the patient was transferred to the private hospital after developing complications following treatment there. He alleged that the hospital declined to keep the patient, citing a lack of available beds.
The patient was subsequently taken to Nicosia General Hospital. According to Pamboridis, public hospitals routinely refuse admissions in similar cases involving patients who have undergone treatment privately, also citing limited bed capacity.
Pamboridis described the handling of the case as unacceptable and questioned whether such practices are compatible with Cyprus’ General Healthcare System (GeSY).
He said he had already submitted details of the case to the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), which oversees GeSY, and would also file a complaint with the Patient Ombudsman.
The MP said that if the patient were to die, questions of potential criminal liability could arise for those involved, including both medical and administrative personnel.
“Those who do not respect patients have no place in our healthcare system,” Pamboridis said.
The allegations concern the treatment and transfer of a specific patient, and no response from the hospital or other parties involved was included in Pamboridis’ post.
