Fresh information in the investigation into the murder of football agent Stavros Demosthenous suggests a chilling level of planning and coordination. Authorities now say the perpetrators were likely inside a van that led Demosthenous’ car, which was being driven by his 20-year-old son near their home, when they opened fire.
The attack occurred around 8:50 a.m., with initial reports indicating the gunmen used a Kalashnikov to target the victim. In a desperate attempt to save his father, Demosthenous’ son sped toward the hospital, but their vehicle was involved in a crash with three other cars near Tsirion Stadium on the highway.
Police quickly cordoned off large areas both at the ambush site near the victim’s home and along the highway for forensic examination. A short time after the shooting, authorities discovered a van burning in the Germasogeia area, believed to be the getaway vehicle. Investigators say the suspects abandoned the van and fled on a motorcycle. CCTV footage is being reviewed to trace their escape route.
Authorities now consider the murder a premeditated professional hit, with indications of precise knowledge of the victim’s movements and a carefully planned escape.
The highway between the Agia Fylaxeos and Troodos roundabouts remains closed as police continue a manhunt. An official statement from the police spokesperson, Kyriaki Lambrianidou, is expected shortly from Limassol.
