The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 40,000 as Israel's relentless military campaign continues to decimate the region, according to reports from Gaza's health authorities. The ongoing conflict, which began after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, has now resulted in at least 40,139 Palestinian deaths and left 92,743 wounded.
Israel’s military operations have forced Palestinians into an increasingly shrinking area, with civilians now confined to just 11 percent of the Gaza Strip. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has described the situation as dire, with some Palestinians left with no choice but to live amidst the rubble of destroyed buildings due to expanding evacuation orders by Israeli forces.
In southern Gaza, Israeli ground forces have intensified their presence, especially around Khan Younis, where a Palestinian journalist was shot in the back while covering the invasion. The ongoing violence has also significantly impacted central Deir el-Balah, adding to the growing number of displaced persons within the already besieged region.
The conflict began after the October 7 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 1,139 people in Israel and saw more than 200 individuals taken captive by Hamas. The staggering death toll and humanitarian crisis in Gaza continue to draw international concern as the war shows no signs of abating.
