In the aftermath of the 2023 Presidential Elections, the staff of Nikos Christodoulides faced a hefty fine of €36,000 following complaints lodged with the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, Ms. Irini Loïzidou-Nikolaidou.
The complaints centered around unsolicited telephone calls and SMS messages. Specifically, the fines were imposed on Mr. Christodoulides' staff in connection with 37 complaints related to calls and/or SMS messages.
The Commissioner issued a statement, disclosing that during the 2023 Presidential Elections, her office received a total of 77 complaints concerning such communications. Among these, 44 cases incurred administrative fines amounting to €41,000. Additionally, six cases resulted in a warning, while one complaint led to a recommendation.
However, 18 complaints were deemed unfounded or lacked the necessary information for an investigation. Four complaints were referred to the Police for further scrutiny, and another four complaints involved ongoing investigations or surveys.
Regarding the 44 cases that incurred fines, the breakdown is as follows: 37 complaints were tied to calls and/or text messages from Mr. Nikos Christodoulides' staff, resulting in the €36,000 fine. Ms. Antigoni Papadopoulou faced fines amounting to €3,000 for four complaints related to text messages, and Ms. Tasoulla Tsokkou incurred fines of €2,000 for three complaints concerning SMS messages.
Furthermore, out of the 77 complaints received, 48 were forwarded to the Election Service. The investigation into the matter has now been completed.
