Cyprus has taken a big step toward its energy future with the launch of the floating natural gas plant Prometheus from Shanghai. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced the news, confirming that Prometheus departed at 1:30 a.m. Cyprus time on the 14th of December and has already sailed beyond China’s territorial waters.
“This marks the beginning of a new energy era for our country,” Letymbiotis said in a social media post. He emphasized that energy autonomy and cheaper energy for citizens are at the heart of Cyprus’ energy plans. He also highlighted the importance of careful planning, dedication, and perseverance in moving forward.
A Major Milestone for Cyprus
Energy Minister George Papanastasiou described the launch of Prometheus as a “very important first step.” In his own social media post, the Minister acknowledged that while this milestone is significant, “there is still a lot to be done.” He thanked his team, the Cyprus Natural Gas Infrastructure Company (ETYFA), and the Presidency for their hard work and promised that efforts would continue until the Vasilikos terminal project is complete.
What’s Next for Prometheus?
Before Prometheus can serve Cyprus, it will make a stop to be certified as a floating gasification plant. According to Papanastasiou, discussions are already underway to determine how Prometheus can be put to use in other locations until the infrastructure at Vasilikos is ready to receive it.
This move brings Cyprus closer to reducing its reliance on expensive energy sources and securing more affordable energy for its people. While there’s more work ahead, the successful launch of Prometheus is a promising sign that Cyprus is on track to achieving greater energy independence.
