Costumes are coming out of closets, glitter is flying off shelves, and anticipation is building across Limassol as the island’s most flamboyant celebration shifts into high gear this weekend with its biggest parade of the season.
The grand carnival procession rolls out Sunday at 1 p.m., when colorful floats and marching bands will flood Archbishop Makarios III Avenue in a spectacle locals wait all year to see. Thousands are expected to line the route, cheering, dancing, and snapping photos as performers turn the main road into a moving street party.
But before the confetti flies, drivers should prepare for road closures. Police say the stretch from the Enaeri traffic lights to the Agios Nikolaos roundabout will shut down from 8 a.m. as parade vehicles gather. A larger section, from the roundabout to the junction with Apostolou Varnava Street, will close from 11 a.m. until midnight to keep the festivities running smoothly.
Authorities are urging motorists to follow directions from officers and park in designated lots run by the Limassol Municipality or private garages to avoid gridlock.
The celebration won’t stop when the last float passes. The carnival finale kicks off at 9 p.m. with a massive open-air dance party at Old Port Square, where music, lights, and revelers will keep the party alive deep into the night.
For locals, it’s more than a parade, it’s a citywide mood. And if the buzz in the streets is any sign, Limassol is more than ready to put on a show.
