Routine traffic stop ends in not-so-routine drug bust

Man collides with two police cars, gets caught with 12 kilos of cannabis and cocaine, and maybe a lesson in bad timing

Newsroom

Is it karma, coincidence, or just plain bad luck? A 35-year-old man in Paphos found himself in serious trouble with the law on Tuesday, all thanks to a routine traffic check that turned out to be anything but routine.

Around 5:30 p.m., officers from the National Traffic Police stopped a car on a Paphos road for what seemed like a standard inspection. But instead of pulling over quietly, the driver allegedly rammed into two police vehicles before being brought to a stop.

Spoiler alert: that didn’t help his case.

Once the car was secured, officers carried out a search and found a travel bag inside the vehicle packed with over 10 kilograms of cannabis, 10 kilos and 41 grams to be exact. As if that wasn’t enough, they also discovered about half a gram of white powder believed to be cocaine.

At this point, the question isn’t whether the man was having a bad day, it’s whether the universe had simply decided enough was enough.

The man was arrested on the spot, and, following the roadside discovery, police conducted further searches at his home and another property he manages. There, they reportedly found another 2.5 kilos of cannabis, bringing the total stash to well over 12 kilograms.

The suspect is now in custody, while Paphos CID and local traffic police continue their investigation.

So next time you're tempted to carry a carload of drugs, maybe don’t drive recklessly past traffic police. Or do, if you’re the kind of person who believes karma always finds a way.
