Russia struck a building housing the European Union’s diplomatic mission in Kyiv during a new wave of attacks early Thursday, Ukrainian officials said, as casualties mounted across the capital.
EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová told Politico the building suffered heavy damage after volleys of drones and ballistic missiles slammed into the city.
Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strike, calling it “a direct violation of the Vienna Convention” that protects diplomats. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Moscow of deliberately escalating and undermining peace efforts.
The overnight assault killed at least 10 people, including a child, and injured 38 others, according to Ukrainian authorities. Residential buildings and infrastructure were damaged in at least seven districts of Kyiv. Ukrainian officials said 13 areas were hit, while debris rained down in 26.
The attack marks one of the most serious escalations against the Ukrainian capital in recent months and adds a diplomatic dimension by targeting a building tied to the EU.
