Schools in Dromolaxia-Meneou face closure

The dispute is routed in employee's unpaid wages

Newsroom

Twelve schools in the Dromolaxia-Meneou municipality are at risk of closure on Monday due to a strike by school staff over unpaid wages. This situation stems from a political dispute regarding the composition of the local school board.

The disagreement arose after the municipality failed to establish a new school board, leaving employees without their January salaries. According to the Larnaca district committee of the political party AKEL, this impasse is a result of partisan politics. AKEL alleges that the ruling party, DISY, has deliberately obstructed the formation of a new board, leading to the current crisis.

The dispute has been ongoing for six weeks, during which the school board has remained dysfunctional. This has created significant operational challenges for local educational institutions.

According to AKEL's statement, DISY's municipal group has refused to appoint its representative to the school board since December, despite directives from the Ministries of Interior and Education. This follows the Interior Minister's rejection of the previous school board selection due to irregularities.

AKEL has criticized DISY's leadership, particularly targeting party president and Parliament Speaker Annita Demetriou, demanding an explanation for their representatives' non-compliance with constitutional requirements and established procedures.

The situation has escalated to directly impact school operations, with staff facing delayed salary payments and threatening to take industrial action. This potential strike action could severely disrupt educational services for students in the municipality.
