A new report from TomTom, the navigation and mapping company, places Cyprus, represented in the index by Nicosia, at 82nd worldwide for traffic congestion in 2024. The study analyzed 501 cities across 62 countries and six continents, evaluating each location based on average driving times and overall congestion levels.

In Nicosia, drivers now spend an average of 26 minutes and 15 seconds to travel 10 kilometers, which is 10 seconds slower than the previous year. Congestion in the city reached 41%, resulting in an estimated 99 hours lost in peak traffic periods during 2024.

On the global scale, Barranquilla in Colombia emerged as the city with the heaviest traffic. Within Europe, London claimed the top spot as the most congested city.

Greece’s major urban centers also showed significant delays. Athens ranked 37th globally, with a typical 10-kilometer trip taking 29 minutes and 39 seconds, about half a minute longer than in 2023. The city’s congestion rate was recorded at 34%, contributing to 111 hours lost during busy periods last year. Thessaloniki, which placed 131st, recorded an average of 22 minutes and 54 seconds for the same distance, marking an increase of 2 minutes and 20 seconds compared with the previous year. Its congestion level also stood at 34%, with 80 hours lost during rush-hour traffic.

Overall, the report indicates that travel times have worsened across several Mediterranean cities, including Nicosia, Athens, and Thessaloniki.
