Takata airbag recall: Cars to be immobilized starting Oct. 3

Thousands of Toyota and Honda owners have yet to schedule mandatory safety repairs.

Government officials on Thursday urged car owners with Takata airbags to respond promptly to a nationwide recall, warning that delays could pose serious safety risks.

Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that roughly 5,000 Toyota owners and 2,000 Honda owners had yet to take action. “When it comes to safety, there is no room for delay,” he said during a briefing at the Presidential Palace.

Letymbiotis said vehicles would begin being gradually immobilized starting Oct. 3, following the schedule announced for the recall, though owners who have already scheduled appointments would be exempt.

An eight-month deadline issued in February has now expired, but the government will allow a grace period through the end of October for those who have booked service appointments, he said.

He reiterated the urgency, noting that many owners have not yet scheduled their recalls. “We urge all citizens to act without further delay,” Letymbiotis said.

Authorities have taken steps to facilitate the process, including a notice from the Department of Road Transport. Citizens can check the Ministry of Transport’s website for details on affected vehicles and recall procedures. Letymbiotis stressed that both vehicle owners and companies handling the recalls must respond promptly.

He added that vehicle immobilizations will occur in stages and that the early-October timeline will not apply to those with late-month appointments.
