Deadly airbags could ground your car in Cyprus

MOT certificates will be cancelled for vehicles with unreplaced Takata airbags.

Starting October 3, 2025, Cyprus will begin cancelling MOT certificates for vehicles that have not had their recalled Takata airbags replaced, the Ministry of Transport announced Thursday.

The move is part of a new nationwide safety campaign to protect drivers and passengers from defective airbags that, under certain conditions, can explode and cause fatal injuries.

The ministry said the awareness drive, already underway, includes TV and radio spots, billboards, newspaper ads, and digital campaigns to reach all vehicle owners, especially those whose cars are subject to the recall.

Owners have had an eight-month deadline to complete the recall process. From October 3, any car that still hasn’t had the faulty airbags replaced will automatically lose its MOT certificate, making it illegal to drive.

Officials stressed that this step is a “critical preventive measure” given the high risk posed by the airbags, which manufacturers have warned could be deadly if deployed.

Car owners are urged to visit www.gov.cy/mtcw to check if their vehicle is affected. Replacement of the defective part is free of charge and ensures the car remains both legal and safe.
