Two tragic road accidents within hours of each other have left two young lives lost, sparking renewed concerns over road safety in Cyprus.
The first accident occurred in Lakatamia on Wednesday evening, claiming the life of 20-year-old George Theophanous. According to police reports, Theophanous was riding his motorcycle along Aegean Street around 7:10 p.m. when he collided with a car driven by a 64-year-old man.
Emergency services rushed both drivers to Nicosia General Hospital, where Theophanous was tragically pronounced dead. The driver of the car was treated for minor injuries and later discharged. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and are urging any witnesses to come forward.
Just a few hours later, another fatal accident took place in Livadia, Larnaca, claiming the life of 16-year-old Christos Panagi.
Panagi, a high school student from Agioi Anargyroi, was riding a moped along Evxinou Pontou Street around 10:30 p.m. when he lost control and crashed into a pavement and then a signboard. He suffered fatal injuries and was transported to Larnaca General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police discovered a helmet at the scene but are conducting tests to determine whether Panagi was wearing it at the time of the crash. Investigators from the Larnaca Traffic Department are looking into the exact circumstances of the accident and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
In the wake of these tragic incidents, authorities are once again emphasizing the importance of road safety measures, including helmet use and responsible driving behavior.
The Nicosia Traffic Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the Lakatamia accident to contact them or reach out via the Citizen’s Line at 1460. The investigations into both crashes remain ongoing.
