As Friday comes to a close, the Troodos mountains have been transformed into a winter spectacle, with heavy snowfall covering peaks, forests, and villages in a thick blanket of white. Videos from Kitas Weather and the Department of Forests captured the gradually deepening snow, creating striking winter scenes across the area.
Authorities warned all day that the snow, combined with dense fog at higher elevations, made roads slippery and hazardous. The road from Troodos Square to the summit of Mount Olympus remained open only to vehicles equipped with anti-skid chains or four-wheel drive. Police urged drivers to slow down, maintain safe distances, and keep headlights on.
Friday also brought a yellow warning from the Cyprus Meteorological Department for very strong to stormy winds from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., with gusts reaching up to 8 Beaufort, adding to the challenges for mountain travel.
The wintry conditions were driven by a cold air mass and low pressure over the region. Snow fell in the higher mountains, while isolated rains and thunderstorms hit western and northern areas. Temperatures dropped to around minus 2 degrees in the high peaks, with inland areas around 7 degrees and coastal spots near 9 degrees. Frost formed locally in the mountains as the day ended.
The weather is expected to remain unsettled through the weekend, with more snow at higher elevations, isolated thunderstorms, and occasional hail. Visitors and residents planning trips to Troodos are advised to take extra precautions, enjoy the views safely, and be prepared for slippery roads.
