Trump delivers longest State of the Union in US history

In nearly two hours, president touts a ''roaring'' economy, clashes with Democrats and revives election and immigration claims.

President Donald Trump set a record Tuesday night, delivering the longest State of the Union address in U.S. history.

He spoke for just under one hour and 48 minutes.

We watched it so you don’t have to. Here’s what stood out.

First: the economy.

Trump opened in full sales mode, declaring that America’s economy is “roaring like never before.” He pointed to lower gas prices, easing mortgage rates, prescription drug costs and a strong stock market as proof that Americans are benefiting.

“The roaring economy is roaring,” he repeated.

But there’s a disconnect. Polling shows many Americans still feel financially squeezed, and only 39% approve of his handling of the economy. That gap, between upbeat White House messaging and public anxiety, hung quietly over much of the night.

Then came the patriotic moments.

The gold medal-winning U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team received a bipartisan standing ovation. A World War II Navy pilot was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in an emotional moment led by first lady Melania Trump.

For a few minutes, the chamber felt united.

It didn’t last.

Trump pivoted back to combat.

He blamed Democrats for rising health care premiums, affordability pressures and Social Security concerns. At one point, he glared across the aisle and said, “You caused that problem.” The rhetoric grew sharper as the speech went on, drawing cheers from Republicans and visible frustration from Democrats.

On the Supreme Court:

After the court struck down his tariff policy last week, Trump struck a softer tone than before, calling the ruling “unfortunate.” He insisted tariffs are bringing in revenue and protecting Americans, a claim many economists dispute, arguing that U.S. businesses and consumers bear much of the cost.

He even suggested tariffs could one day replace income taxes, a long shot given that tax authority ultimately rests with Congress.

On elections:

Trump repeated his long-standing claims of widespread voter fraud and urged Congress to pass a national voter ID law. Courts have repeatedly rejected similar claims in the past, but with midterms approaching, the issue is clearly back at center stage.

On immigration:

He returned to familiar language about “criminal aliens” and tougher enforcement, though he avoided mentioning recent controversies over federal tactics in certain cities.

On foreign policy:

Trump said he prefers diplomacy with Iran but warned he would “never allow” Tehran to obtain a nuclear weapon, as U.S. military forces remain heavily positioned in the Middle East.

By the end, the speech had touched nearly every major issue, the economy, elections, immigration, global security, in a style that blended policy, politics and rally energy.

It was classic Trump.

And at nearly two hours, it was historic for one clear reason: no president has ever spoken longer at a State of the Union address.
