U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn attention to the strategic importance of Greece and Cyprus in global trade and diplomacy, sharing a Breitbart News article that underscores their role in the proposed India-Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
The article, titled “Mediterranean Leaders Excited for Possibilities of Peace, Economic Agreements with Trump’s Return”, highlights a recent panel discussion at the Delphi Forum in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Hellenic American Leadership Council. Greek and Cypriot deputy ministers emphasized the corridor’s potential to reshape global trade, likening it to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandra Papadopoulou noted that geography alone makes Greece and Cyprus natural links between Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. “The map speaks for itself,” she said, calling the project “an opportunity to be taken advantage of.” She described the two countries as the “glue” that binds economic openness, political stability, and strong U.S.-EU alliances within the corridor.
Cyprus Deputy Minister of Migration Nicholas Ioannides also pointed to the Abraham Accords—the Trump administration’s Middle East peace agreements—as a significant diplomatic achievement. He stressed that Cyprus, as the EU’s southeasternmost nation, is a key strategic partner for both the U.S. and Israel and is ready to support further peace initiatives in the region.
Trump’s endorsement of the discussion suggests continued U.S. interest in Greece and Cyprus as pivotal players in global trade and diplomacy. The renewed focus on their role in economic and geopolitical stability could shape future international policies, particularly if Trump secures another term in office.
