In a stunning policy shift, former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a plan for the United States to "take over" and "own" Gaza, proposing a redevelopment initiative that he claims would turn the war-torn enclave into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” His comments, made after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have sparked outrage among Palestinian leaders and human rights advocates.
Trump’s vision involves resettling Palestinians elsewhere while the U.S. oversees reconstruction efforts, including clearing rubble and removing unexploded bombs. He emphasized that the plan would create "unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area" but provided little detail on its implementation.
Hamas quickly condemned the proposal, calling it a “recipe for chaos,” while Palestinian advocates accused Trump of endorsing ethnic cleansing and violating international law. Democratic lawmakers, including Rashida Tlaib, also slammed the plan, with Tlaib calling it an open call for forced displacement.
Trump's remarks have raised serious questions about U.S. foreign policy in the region, the future of Palestinian statehood, and whether his proposal is a genuine plan or a political distraction. Meanwhile, key Arab states, including Saudi Arabia, have reiterated their opposition to any displacement of Palestinians, reinforcing the deep geopolitical tensions surrounding Gaza’s future.
