Tuesday forecast: An afternoon ambush of mountain mood swings

Clear skies for your morning coffee, thunder for your late lunch.

Newsroom

If you were hoping for a consistent weather story today, you’re out of luck. The current weak low-pressure system is essentially a part-time worker: it starts the day with bright sunshine and ends it by throwing a localized tantrum over the mountains.

The morning will clear the early fog and low clouds, giving the island a deceptively peaceful start. Enjoy the blue sky while it’s here, because the afternoon development is already warming up in the wings.

After lunch, the mountains and inland plains are the designated targets for isolated showers and thunderstorms. If you’re working in the center of the island, don't be surprised if the sun disappears just as you’re heading out for a break.

Winds will transition from a light breeze to a locally strong 4 to 5 Beaufort by the afternoon. The sea will mirror this shift, getting slightly rougher as the day progresses.

The temperature is getting warm. Inland areas are peaking at 29°C, while the coasts are staying a bit more refreshed between 23°C and 24°C. Up in the higher peaks, it’s a cool 18°C, assuming you don’t mind the damp.

Tonight, the drama clears out, leaving us with mostly clear skies and the occasional patch of low-level mist to greet the early risers tomorrow.

The mid-week repeat button: Wednesday – Friday
If you feel like you’ve lived this day before, you probably have. The outlook through Friday is remarkably stable in its instability. Every day follows the same pattern: clear mornings, cloudy lunchbreaks, and afternoon thunderstorms over the mountains and inland. There are no major shifts in temperature coming. We are anchored to the seasonal average through Friday, which at least means your wardrobe choices are one less thing to worry about this week.

It’s a standard spring week; predictably unpredictable.
