A Potters Bar man of UK-Cypriot heritage has been sentenced following a string of burglaries targeting local businesses.
Michael Georgiou, 42, who lives on Chace Avenue, appeared at Hatfield Magistrates’ Court on 9th December. He admitted to three counts of burglary, with six additional offences taken into account by the court.
Georgiou received a 26-week sentence for the burglaries and an extra 12 weeks for breaching a suspended sentence, totaling 38 weeks behind bars.
Police had issued a warrant for Georgiou before his arrest by a neighbouring force on 7th December. Officers later recovered distinctive clothing from his last known address that matched what was worn during the break-ins.
Detective Sergeant Krisztina Gulyas, who led the investigation, said Georgiou’s actions had caused both financial loss and emotional distress for local shop owners. “The custodial sentence should allow him time to reflect on his actions,” she added.
The burglaries took place in two six-week periods, between November and December in consecutive years. In response, the Neighbourhood Policing Team has stepped up patrols in Potters Bar as part of the ongoing Winter of Action campaign to keep town centres safe during the festive season.
