The plenary session of the informal expanded conference on Cyprus, convened by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, began Thursday at 11:30 a.m. New York time at UN headquarters. The session brings together key figures including President Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey, Giorgos Gerapetritis and Hakan Fidan, and the UK Minister of State for Europe, Stephen Doughty.

Accompanied by senior officials from each delegation, the leaders engaged in discussions aimed at reviving peace talks. A working lunch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. New York time, followed by a final plenary expected to conclude by 4:45 p.m.

President Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus’s readiness to resume substantive negotiations from where they were suspended in 2017, emphasizing commitment to UN Security Council resolutions and the UN framework as the foundation for resolving the long-standing Cyprus issue.

Christodoulides also held bilateral talks with Guterres earlier Thursday, thanking the Secretary-General for his personal dedication to restarting talks amid ongoing international challenges. Guterres met separately with other key participants, including the Turkish Cypriot leader, Greek and Turkish foreign ministers, and the UK official.
