Five individuals were arrested in Larnaca during a coordinated police operation targeting crime and public safety, authorities said Thursday.
The arrests, made in flagrante delicto, involved offenses ranging from drug and weapon possession to illegal property possession. The overnight sweep focused on the city and district of Larnaca, including the Finikoudes seafront, and was led by the Larnaca Police Department with support from the Rapid Response Unit (MMAD) and the Crime Prevention Unit (YAM).
Among those detained was a 23-year-old motorcyclist caught riding without a license plate. Police discovered a folding knife in his possession and determined he lacked both a driving license and insurance.
A 28-year-old man was arrested after officers found a bat and brass knuckles on him while he was a passenger in a car. The vehicle’s driver, 34, was also questioned.
Two others, aged 21 and 42, were arrested after police reportedly found small amounts of cannabis in their possession.
A fifth suspect, also 21, was detained after officers discovered two silver wrist chains in his possession, each still packaged and tagged with prices. Police are investigating whether the items were stolen.
The operation was part of broader, ongoing efforts across Cyprus to reduce crime, particularly in tourist-heavy coastal areas. Authorities also conducted inspections at nightlife venues to monitor alcohol sales and sound violations. Routine traffic checks were carried out nationwide to enhance road safety.
Police said these operations will continue daily throughout the summer.
