The strategic partnership between the University of Nicosia, UNIC Athens, and Purdue University aims to create a powerful link between Europe and the United States in higher education, research and innovation.

In an interview, University of Nicosia CEO Antonis Polemitis explains what this collaboration means for students, researchers and the wider region.

Q: Tell us about the strategic partnership between UNIC Athens and Purdue. What are your goals?

A: The partnership is built on three clear pillars.

First, joint postgraduate and executive education programs.

Second, coordinated research and innovation through the UNIC Evolve ecosystem, with a focus on artificial intelligence, especially in areas like healthspan, longevity and biodefense.

And third, the creation of a regional Purdue office at the UNIC Athens campus in Ellinikon.

Strategically, our goal is to create a meaningful bridge between Europe and the U.S. in advanced education, research and innovation, with a strong emphasis on AI, data and high-impact scientific fields.

Q: What key fields will this collaboration focus on, and how will students benefit?

A: The fields have already been outlined and include precision health, personalized medicine and pharmaceuticals, next-generation sequencing, life sciences, robotics, artificial intelligence, agricultural and biomedical engineering, digital twins, computational fluid dynamics, and analytical chemistry.

For students, this means access to internationally connected programs in partnership with a top U.S. research university. It also means studying in an environment where teaching, research, and innovation are integrated.

Purdue’s engineering school is ranked among the top in the U.S., which adds significant academic value and global reach to the collaboration.

Q: What will the selection criteria be? Will scholarships be offered?

A: Specific admission criteria, application processes and any scholarships will be announced per program. These will depend on the subject, prerequisites, capacity and structure of each postgraduate course.

Q: What research projects are expected to launch first?

A: The exact projects haven’t been finalized yet, but the thematic focus is clear.

We are looking at coordinated research in areas linked to UNIC Evolve, particularly AI applications in healthspan, longevity and biodefense, aligned with initiatives like One Health and Purdue Computes.

A key element will be using real-world data to better understand, predict and improve factors that affect human health and resilience.

We already have a strong foundation to build on, including research on urban environments and airflow in Athens, environmental health collaborations, studies on the gut microbiome and cancer, and work mapping disease risks—especially within the One Health framework.

Q: Why was The Ellinikon chosen as the base for Purdue’s regional office?

A: The Ellinikon is Europe’s largest urban redevelopment project and is being developed as a smart city hub with advanced infrastructure and a strong focus on quality of life.

For Purdue, it offers direct engagement with industry and the broader innovation ecosystem. For UNIC Athens, it provides an ideal setting where education, research, entrepreneurship and everyday life come together.

It’s also the perfect base for UNIC Evolve, allowing us to connect AI and real-world data with applications in health, longevity and biodefense.

Q: When is the Purdue office expected to open?

A: Based on the timeline for Phase 2 of the UNIC Athens campus, the expected timeframe is around 2028–2029. However, there is no official launch date yet.

Q: Do you expect this partnership to attract scientists to the region?

A: Absolutely, and on multiple levels.

First, it connects Cyprus and Greece with a leading U.S. research university in cutting-edge fields.
Second, The Ellinikon creates an environment that combines research, quality of life, and access to a growing innovation ecosystem.
And third, the collaboration includes joint research, faculty cooperation and Purdue’s physical presence in Athens.

All of this significantly increases the likelihood of attracting researchers, young scientists and high-level international partnerships.
