Athens airport takes off toward a greener future

Massive €1.28B upgrade to include rooftop gardens, renewable energy, and smart waste systems, without pausing a single flight

Kathimerini Greece Newsroom

Athens International Airport is gearing up for a major transformation, but it's not just about getting bigger. It's about getting greener.

By 2032, the airport will expand by 148,000 square meters, all while staying fully operational. But what's making headlines isn’t just the scale; it's the sustainability. From new renewable energy systems and innovative water recycling to smart waste management and a full-on garden inside the terminal, Athens is doubling down on its commitment to remain one of the world’s greenest airports.

The €1.28 billion upgrade is part of a long-term vision to future-proof the airport against growing traffic and environmental concerns. With 31.8 million passengers passing through in 2023, the airport is preparing to welcome up to 40 million annually without compromising on its eco-standards.

The project will expand passenger areas and aircraft facilities, boost commercial spaces, and add new departure gates. But unlike many large-scale infrastructure projects, this one promises zero disruption to day-to-day operations.

In a world where air travel and sustainability often clash, Athens International is proving you can grow and go green at the same time.
