Monday plot twist: Sky gives us rain, lightning, and a side of hail

A standard Monday gets an unseasonable shake-up as atmospheric instability gives us lunchtime storms.

Newsroom

Welcome back to the grind, Cyprus. If you were counting on the usual, predictable summer monotony to ease you into the workweek, the atmosphere has other plans. We are dealing with a rare combo of our trusty seasonal low pressure mixed with a sudden dose of atmospheric instability. Translation? The textbook blue skies are taking a midday break, and some of us are about to get drenched.

While the morning starts with the usual routine (clearing away any early mist and patchy low clouds), things get chaotic right around lunchtime.

Inland hubs: Temperatures will peak at 36°C. It’s noticeably cooler than our recent stretch, but the real story is the sky. From midday onwards, expect developing clouds to result in scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. There is even a chance of hail hitting the interior.
The mountains & north: Troodos (26°C) and the northern parts of the island are directly in the firing line for these afternoon storms. If you're up in the peaks, pack a jacket and an umbrella.
The coasts: The southeastern and eastern coasts will stay at a comfortable 31°C, while the remaining coastal strips will float around 30°C. The coastlines will largely escape the rain, though the southeastern beaches will get a bit windy later today.

Wind and waves: Mornings will start completely calm with lazy, variable breezes at 3 Beaufort. By afternoon, the wind shifts to a southwesterly/northwesterly direction at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The southeastern coast will see the sharpest bursts, temporarily kicking up to a firm 4 to 5 Beaufort. Aside from a bit of afternoon chop, the sea will remain mostly calm to slight.

Tonight: A calm and clear reset

Thankfully, the atmosphere burns through its drama by sunset, offering a much more peaceful evening. The skies will clear out nicely, leaving most areas dry and pleasant for an outdoor dinner. You might see a few lingering patches of low cloud or a touch of midnight mist forming inland and down east.

The sea water will return to its glass-like state across the south and east, though the western coastline will stay just a little bit rough overnight. Winds will settle into a faint, variable 3 Beaufort.

The outlook: The sequel nobody asked for

If you think today is a one-off anomaly, Tuesday is ready to repeat the performance. Expect a near carbon-copy of today's behavior. Clouds will build up again after midday, triggering another round of isolated showers and thunderstorms, particularly across the mountains and the eastern areas.

Wednesday & Thursday: The weather finally begins to stabilize, giving us mostly fine days. However, the mountains and the deep interior just can't shake the bug. Expect localized afternoon clouds to bring brief, isolated cracks of thunder through Thursday. Temperatures will crawl up ever so slightly, but we’re staying very close to the standard July averages.
