A graphic mobile phone video showing the immediate aftermath of Tuesday’s domestic shooting in Limassol is being widely circulated on messaging apps, causing distress to the victim's family and complicating the ongoing police investigation.
The 46-year-old victim remains in critical but stable condition in the hospital. Doctors state her recovery is vital, not only for her survival but because investigators view her future testimony as the definitive account needed to explain how a routine Tuesday morning ended in an attempted murder.
Financial strain and warnings
The suspect, a 55-year-old police officer, was reportedly facing severe financial difficulties before the attack. Sources within the department reveal that senior officers held a meeting with him just days before the shooting. This discussion was initiated because several colleagues complained that the suspect had borrowed large sums of money from them to fund a gambling habit.
While supervisors did not formally discipline the officer during the meeting, they did issue strict official advice regarding his personal conduct and financial debts. Detectives are now examining these betting debts to see if financial pressure drove the officer to violence.
No record of prior abuse
Friends and relatives of the injured woman told authorities that she had been trapped in a deeply troubled marriage for some time. However, police headquarters confirmed that no official complaints regarding domestic abuse or harassment had ever been filed against the officer.
Investigators are currently interviewing neighbors and close acquaintances to reconcile these informal reports of a difficult home life with the lack of official police records.
The leaked footage
The viral video has become a primary concern for local authorities. Because the footage captures a highly sensitive crime scene while the victim is still fighting for her life, police are urging the public to stop sharing the file out of respect for the family's privacy.
Detectives continue to analyze regional security cameras, phone records, and physical evidence collected from the scene to determine exactly what happened before the weapon was fired.
