Stormy start to the week as Christmas countdown begins

Thunderstorms, hail, and mountain snow in the forecast as last-minute shoppers brave the elements.

Newsroom

With just two days to go until Christmas, the Met Office has issued a yellow storm warning in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. Isolated strong thunderstorms will make a dramatic appearance across the island, bringing rainfall of up to 50 millimeters per hour, accompanied by hail in some areas. By early evening, however, the weather promises to settle, allowing some breathing room for those last-minute Christmas preparations.

Expect mainly cloudy skies today with frequent showers and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. If you're out tackling your holiday shopping, keep an umbrella handy and watch out for slippery spots caused by hail. Winds will blow south to southwest at 3-4 Beaufort, stirring up choppy seas. Temperatures will reach 16°C inland, 17°C along the coast, and a chilly 8°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight, partly cloudy skies could bring a sprinkle of rain, especially along the coast. Frost is expected to form in the mountains as temperatures dip to 6°C inland, 12°C on the west coast, and 3°C in the higher mountains.

Looking Ahead:
- Tuesday: Cloudy with scattered showers and a chance of thunderstorms.
- Christmas Day: Expect a mixed bag of sunshine and showers. After lunch, Santa’s sleigh might encounter thunderstorms and even snow or sleet in the mountains, so bundle up if you’re heading out for some festive fun.
- Thursday: More rain, isolated thunderstorms, and mountain snow are expected.

The temperatures will remain steady tomorrow, but Christmas Day will bring a slight chill—perfect for cozying up with loved ones by the fire.

Whether you're braving the weather to snag last-minute gifts or enjoying some mulled wine at home, stay safe and have a holly, jolly countdown to Christmas!
