The dam at Kato Pyrgos in the Tillyria region has overflowed, marking a significant milestone after years of deterioration and limited capacity. The development was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture through a social media post, highlighting the impact of recent restoration work.
According to the Ministry, the dam’s current condition reflects the results of long-term planning, inter-agency cooperation, and political commitment. After remaining clogged for decades, the reservoir was finally cleared of accumulated sediment, allowing it to function again as a water collection and storage facility. Approximately 90,000 cubic metres of debris were removed during the project.
The restoration was completed in 2025 by the Nicosia Water Board, with funding provided by the Water Development Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, and additional co-financing from the European Union. The project is considered critical for the wider area, where farmers have long called for improved water infrastructure.
As a result of the cleanup, local growers will now be able to irrigate their fields using water from the dam for the first time in many years. The Ministry noted that this responds directly to a long-standing request from the agricultural community in the region.
In parallel, the government has increased investment in irrigation infrastructure, allocating €1.15 million in 2025 to support agricultural production and promote more sustainable water management.
Officials say the successful restoration of the dam demonstrates how persistent infrastructure problems can be resolved when planning and resources align. The government has reiterated its commitment to projects aimed at strengthening rural areas and supporting the long-term viability of the agricultural sector.
